Excessive Drinking Leads To Mental Health Issues And Depression, An Enabling Wife, And Motivation For Positive Change

It took several years but Sarah eventually made up her mind that she had it with her husband's careless and abusive drinking. She was worn-out from seeing Keith come home after midnight from drinking instead of spending time with her and the children. She was also tired of the DWI Keith recently got. Additionally she was drained from manufacturing explanations for her husband when he couldn't show up for work on time due to his excessive and abusive drinking.

In a similar manner, she was nervous about the fact that their relationship was going downhill due to Keith's careless and hazardous drinking. And lastly she was worn-out from the insecure financial situation into which he had put his family due to his careless drinking behavior.

One Sunday morning when Sarah was pondering what she could do about her husband's careless and hazardous drinking, she got to the point that she honestly had to do something constructive to cut into the destructive cycle of Keith's abusive drinking behavior. So Sarah looked in the local yellow pages under "alcohol treatment" and discovered quite a few rehabilitation centers that were all located less than twenty-five miles away from where she and her husband resided.

When Sarah called each treatment clinic she introduced herself and stated that her husband was exhibiting careless and hazardous drinking behavior. She also articulated that her spouse had a fine health insurance at work and that residential or outpatient alcohol abuse treatment would be covered if a physician in the company health network suggested the rehabilitation.

After listening to Sarah go over her husband's abusive and unhealthy drinking, the therapist in a supportive but firm way explained to Sarah how she more likely than not played a part in her spouse's unhealthy and excessive drinking through the months and the years. How? Essentially by covering for him rather than letting him suffer the results of his careless and hazardous drinking behavior.

Stated more precisely, the physician stated to Sarah that she may have been unintentionally enabling Keith's careless drinking behavior. The counselor also underscored the fact that Sarah would not be able to control her spouse's conduct. With the guidance and encouragement of the rehab team at the healthcare facility, on the other hand, she would not only be able to learn how to avoid contributing to Keith's excessive and abusive drinking but she would also be able to learn how to motivate him to schedule an appointment at the rehab center so that he could discuss his careless drinking behavior with a counselor.

The good news was that after Sarah explained this to Keith and he saw that she was not joking, he told her that he had been extremely apprehensive about his abusive and unhealthy drinking behavior and that he was somewhat relieved to learn that Sarah wanted to do something positive about his excessive and abusive drinking behavior. Consequently, he scheduled an appointment to see a physician at the local alcohol rehab facility.

While simply calling a treatment center does not ensure that a person's excessive and abusive drinking behavior will become less problematic or that an individual will automatically be more willing to learning about alcohol abuse facts, scheduling an appointment is undoubtedly a necessary step in the treatment process. And since Keith wanted to learn more about alcohol abuse statistics, about getting professional help for his excessive and careless drinking, and about alcohol abuse and alcoholism the probability for a successful recovery was considerably enhanced.
